Ram Power Wagon of 2019

Originally designed as a military weapons carrier during World War II, the RAM Power Wagon has a rich history. While its original purpose of troop support has evolved, the truck, based on the Crew Cab 2500 Heavy Duty, underwent a complete redesign for the 2019 model year, earning acclaim as “the benchmark for performance, capability, technology, and luxury.” Epoch Times took part in a media drive in Whistler to explore its capabilities.

Now geared for off-roading, the Power Wagon stands out as Canada’s most capable full-size off-road pickup, boasting the unique feature of genuine rock climbing ability, according to Mike Szymkiewicz, senior manager of product planning at FCA Canada. Notably, it comes equipped with the industry’s sole factory-installed winch.

What sets the Power Wagon apart? Its distinctive height, achieved through a purpose-built suspension employing Bilstein shocks, modified control arms with Articulink high-movement joints at the axle mount, higher spring rates, and over two inches of lift, designed to withstand rugged terrain.

During challenging ascents, such as navigating over logs or boulders, the conventional sway bar can hinder progress. However, in 4WD high or low at speeds below 29 km/h, the front unit can be electronically disengaged at the touch of a button, enhancing front axle flexibility. The suspension’s impressive vertical travel ensures a smooth ride over obstacles.

A new addition to the Power Wagon’s arsenal is a 360-degree camera, particularly useful for maintaining visibility when cresting hills. The forward view option, aided by on-screen gridlines, enhances spatial awareness.

The truck also features a custom-built winch by Warn Industries, capable of supporting up to 12,000 pounds, providing a reliable solution for self-recovery or aiding others in challenging situations. The synthetic lightweight material of the winch line prevents kinking, fraying, or tension buildup.

Despite its rugged exterior, characterized by a bold blacked-out grille, aggressive head and taillamps, bumpers, fender flares, and 17-inch black wheels, the Power Wagon offers optional premium interior packages. These include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, backbench, Uconnect infotainment system, and a 17-speaker audio system. The 12-inch touchscreen, though visually impressive, may pose some challenges when operated with gloves.

All Power Wagon models come with 4×4 capability, powered by the proven 6.4L HEMI V8 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Generating 410 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque, the powertrain excels in both off-road performance and towing, with a maximum towing capacity of 10,620 pounds.
