In a letter addressed to Mayor Robert Sullivan, the committee members express concern over an upsurge in violence at Brockton High School, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to prevent potential tragedies.

The letter highlights a “disturbing increase” in incidents related to violence, security issues, and substance abuse on campus. The committee members request Mayor Sullivan to approach Governor Healey and seek the deployment of the National Guard. They believe that the National Guard’s expertise in crisis management and community support could provide a crucial temporary intervention while working towards a comprehensive, long-term solution in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

In response to questions about the proposal, a representative from Governor Maura Healey’s office stated, “Our administration is committed to ensuring that schools are safe and supportive environments.” They acknowledged the concerns raised about Brockton High School and indicated ongoing communication with local officials.

The city has been grappling with discussions on addressing violence at the school for months. Recent footage shared with NBC Boston depicts students fighting on a stairwell at Brockton High School, adding to concerns about the deteriorating environment. School committee meetings have been held to address safety risks for both staff and students.

While the idea of National Guard assistance received support from some committee members, Councilor at Large Winthrop Farwell, Jr., expressed disagreement. Farwell emphasized the need for consistent enforcement of rules, addressing misconduct, and involving parents in resolving current issues rather than bringing in the National Guard.
