The affected customer accounts, numbering 232,000 and spanning from June 2019 to July 2023, were promptly notified. The compromised data included full names, dates of birth, mobile numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, and Tangerine account numbers. Tangerine assured that it does not retain identity documents or payment details for its customers.
The ongoing investigation indicates that the login credentials of a contractor engaged by Tangerine were exploited to access the database. The company has taken precautionary measures, revoking network and system access for the specific user’s credentials, and changing all other team usernames and passwords. Additionally, access to the impacted legacy database has been closed.
While emphasizing that Tangerine has proactively reviewed and minimized the data it retains, CEO Andrew Branson expressed disappointment over the incident. He assured customers that the company is committed to learning from the breach and implementing necessary enhancements to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Branson conveyed a sincere apology to the affected customers, recognizing the impact on Tangerine’s loyal customer base. Looking ahead, the company pledges to fortify its security measures to safeguard customer information and maintain trust in its services.
