One of Kia’s recent successes is the Kia Carnival, a minivan set for a refresh in the 2025 model year, including the introduction of a hybrid variant. Unveiled at the 2024 Chicago Auto Show alongside the refreshed 2025 Kia K5 sedan, the Carnival, though officially termed an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), holds a significant market share in Korea. Russell Wager, Vice President of Marketing at Kia America, notes that the Carnival’s popularity is driving demand, making it a top-seller in Korea and a sought-after model in North America.

The 2025 Carnival is expected to continue its success, with the hybrid option potentially accounting for half of its sales. Wager emphasizes that the term “MPV” is enticing for potential buyers, while the strong demand allows dealers to command full sticker prices, ensuring profitable sales.

Another anticipated addition to Kia’s lineup is the 2025 Kia EV9 electric SUV, a three-row model and the electric counterpart to the popular Kia Telluride. Wager expresses excitement about the EV9, reporting impressive sales figures in the U.S. and anticipating increased awareness after a Super Bowl commercial. While the EV9 is currently imported from Korea, production will commence at the West Point, Georgia plant in the summer.

On the electric front, Kia has introduced the Kia EV5 compact crossover, but it will not be available in the U.S. due to tax rebate eligibility issues. However, Kia has plans for the Kia EV3, a next-generation affordable EV, though no specific timeline has been provided.

As dealers express interest in a pickup truck, Wager acknowledges the demand but emphasizes the need for a strategic approach. Kia is cautious about entering the pickup truck segment, preferring a balanced approach with Hyundai, where each brand specializes in different vehicle categories.

In summary, Kia’s positive challenges include meeting the high demand for its existing models, introducing exciting electric vehicles like the EV9, and navigating the potential introduction of a pickup truck with careful consideration for market dynamics.
