SpaceX Falcon 9 Successfully Deploys Two German Military Satellites in SARah-2 Mission

On Sunday morning, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched the SARah-2 mission, carrying two synthetic aperture radar reconnaissance satellites for the German military into low Earth orbit (LEO). The launch occurred from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 8:11 a.m. EST, following a one-day delay for additional preflight checks.

The SARah-2 mission aims to replace the aging SAR-Lupe constellation with two “reflector antenna” satellites, SARah 2 and SARah 3, which will fly in formation with SARah 1 to enhance the constellation’s resolution.

The Falcon 9’s first stage, making its eighth flight, successfully touched down on Landing Zone 4 at Vandenberg about eight minutes after liftoff. SARah 2 and SARah 3 were expected to deploy into LEO from the Falcon 9’s upper stage approximately 20 minutes and 25 minutes after launch, respectively.

This launch marks SpaceX’s 94th orbital mission of the year, highlighting the company’s busy schedule in 2023. Additionally, SpaceX conducted two test flights of its massive Starship rocket during the year, even though they did not achieve orbital status.

The SARah-2 mission is a significant step in the ongoing efforts to upgrade and enhance satellite reconnaissance capabilities for the German military, and the successful launch underscores SpaceX’s reliability and efficiency in space transportation.
