The No.1 Tipped NFL Draft Pick Trevor Lawrence Refuses to Boast an Ego
The NFL 2021 Draft is upon us, and whilst Football fans are starved of the beautiful game, it’s the one time during the off-season where celebrations can be contrived.
The No.1 draft pick has been Forecasted since 2018, as the ultra-talented Clemson Tigers star Quarter-Back Trevor Lawrence has wowed critics and fans alike. And with such future star power, you would believe his press coverage should outweigh that of his peers. This was all but true until Sports Illustrated decided to run a cover story on the man who’s been destined as the first-round pick since initially burst onto the College Football scene.
However, although Lawrence has been unappreciated by the general press, the QB has stated he doesn’t need the scene in a similar fashion to others next to and before him.
“It’s not like I need this for my life to be OK,” Lawrence told SI.com. “I want to do it because I want to be the best I can be. I want to maximize my potential. Who wouldn’t want to? You kind of waste it if you don’t.”
And who can argue with the kid? He’s completely justified in the words that he expresses. Once you have a gift, focus on becoming the greatest with it. This attitude should be held on a pedestal, and yes, he’s still young and has time to change for better or worse, but these expressions are a sign of positivity from a young role model of generations to come.
“It’s hard to explain that because I want people to know that I’m passionate about what I do, and it’s imperative to me, but… I don’t have this huge chip on my shoulder that everyone’s out to get me, and I’m trying to prove everybody wrong,” Lawrence said. “I just don’t have that. I can’t manufacture that. I don’t want to… I think that’s unhealthy to a certain extent, just always thinking that you’ve got to prove somebody wrong, you’ve got to do more, you’ve got to be better.”
It’s rare in professional sports that the greatest remain humble. And Lawrence indeed obtains the skills to be ‘that guy’ on the football field one day. I cannot imagine his humble character complaining about a later stage draft pick twenty years after it happened, for example.
With the Jacksonville Jaguars first to strike gold, Lawrence already inspires the Jaguars playbook. The sole reason Urban Meyer took this role, and Lawrence could be the player to turn this team around. When making your best NFL draft picks, including Lawrence as your No.1 is almost a given at this point. But still, the hype surrounding has not produced an egotistical nature – Lawrence’s father and his former coach can vouch.
“He’s not award-driven. He’s not ‘I want to win a Super Bowl at all costs’ type of guy.”, said Jeremy Lawrence. Besides, Lawrence high-school coach had similar views, “With who he is as a person, he could walk away from it tomorrow and be fine.”
I anticipate that the Jacksonville Jaguars will be ignorant towards Trevor Lawrence and his admirable characteristics; let us be honest, Lawrence could be the cockiest guy on the field, and his skills would validate it. But given the history of the quarterback position and the narcissism that has followed, it would be a pleasure to witness a potential future legend hold himself as a true gentleman throughout his NFL career.
As for Lawrence, the comments you or I make aren’t going to affect him. This goes hand in hand with his persona we speak off. If he were to garner a chip on his shoulder, I believe we would have witnessed this characteristic come to light already. Losing his final two games on the biggest stage in college football – the national title game in 2019 and the national semi-final game in 2020 is more than enough to send ego’s flying with a point to prove. But Lawrence, nope, he’s just too cool, calm and collective without having to prove anything to anybody.
