Niraj Shah, the Indian-American Chief Executive Officer Indian-American CEO (CEO) of online furniture retailer Wayfair, conveyed a special message to his employees following the company’s successful financial performance. In a note to employees earlier this month, Shah underscored the importance of hard work for achieving success, expressing belief that ambitious individuals find fulfillment in witnessing their efforts translate into tangible results.

He endorsed working long hours and blending work and personal life, asserting that these practices should not be avoided. According to Fortune, Shah dismissed the notion that employees should not work, deeming it “laughably false” and emphasizing that hard work is essential for success.
Shah also encouraged Wayfair employees to approach company expenditures as if it were their own money, advising them to evaluate the value, reasonableness, and negotiate prices. He shared positive news about the company’s return to profitability, rallying employees to work collectively towards even greater success.
However, Shah’s message received mixed reactions online, with some users characterizing it as “toxic.” Critics on platforms like Reddit argued that long hours do not necessarily correlate with productivity and questioned the true benefits for employees in light of the company’s profitability. The discourse around work-life balance and compensation emerged, with some users expressing skepticism about the worthiness of sacrificing personal time unless adequately reflected in compensation.
Notably, Shah is not the first CEO to advocate for extended working hours. Earlier, Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy made similar statements, emphasizing the need for a shift in India’s work culture and suggesting that youth should be prepared to work longer hours to enhance the country’s global competitiveness.
